Curriculum Drops

Monthly curriculum packages for Sprouts families. Each drop arrives two weeks before the month begins — everything you need, organized and ready to open.

Full Pilot Edition · Includes live session schedules. Sprouts live virtual session: Tuesdays, time TBD. Async days: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
Unit 1 · August 2026
Belonging + Voice

This month your Sprouts learner steps into the year asking the biggest questions: Who am I? Where do I come from? What makes my voice mine? This unit is read-aloud centered, conversation rich, and built around books by authors who look like your child. You do not need a background in teaching. You need this guide, the books, and time.

"Who are you? What words belong to you?"
Theme Focus
Identity · Names · Belonging
Learners explore who they are, where their families come from, and what it means for their name and voice to take up space in the world.
How This Unit Works
One anchor book per 1–2 weeks. Daily sessions run 30–60 minutes depending on your learner's pace. Early Sprouts: mostly read-aloud. Late Sprouts: begin reading alongside you.
Social-Emotional Learning
Self-worth + the power of words. Your child learns that their name, voice, and story belong in the room. Affirmation is the curriculum — everything else builds from it.
Subjects Covered
ELA (Rooted in Reading) · Math (Singapore 1A–3A) · Science (Ecosystems) · Rooted in Stories · Faith + Formation · Visual Art · Spanish · Play & Curiosity
🟡 Early Sprouts · Ages 5–6

Educator reads all anchor texts aloud. Writing output is copying one sentence or dictating to you. Phonics happens in a focused 10-minute block each day using CVC words. Oral participation is the goal — do not push for independent writing yet.

🔵 Late Sprouts · Ages 7–8

Beginning readers join in — read one page alongside you, then try the next page alone. Writing output is 2–4 sentences independently. Phonics focus: short and long vowels, beginning blends. Add 10 new sight words per week, written and oral.

How to Use This Guide

Each week has a focus, a read-aloud, and daily activity plans. You do not need to do everything. Read the week plan, pick what fits your family, and let the conversation carry you. The books do most of the work.

Links throughout open portal pages with printable templates, vocabulary card downloads, and activity sheets. Full Pilot families: your live session schedule appears at the top of each week.

Month 1 · Books + Materials
What You Need

Gather these before August 18. All anchor texts are available at public libraries — check your local branch first before purchasing.

Anchor Text · Weeks 1–2
The Word Collector
Peter H. Reynolds
Jerome collects beautiful words the way others collect stamps. Slow down on the pages where he shares his collection. Ask: what words does your learner want to keep?
Anchor Text · Weeks 1–2
The King of Kindergarten
Derrick Barnes
A confident, joyful portrait of a Black child stepping into school for the first time. Perfect for setting the tone of the whole year. Read it on the first day.
Week 3
Your Name Is a Song
Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow
A child whose name keeps getting mispronounced learns from her mother that names carry music. One of the most important conversations you'll have all year — the book opens it for you.
Week 4
Each Kindness
Jacqueline Woodson
A quiet, honest book about what happens when we don't let someone in. Late Sprouts can hold the emotional weight. For Early Sprouts, focus on the image of kindness spreading like ripples.
Optional Enrichment
I Am Enough
Grace Byers
A lyrical affirmation of identity. Read anytime — especially when your child needs to hear it most. Works beautifully alongside the "I Am" writing project in Week 4.

Month 1 · Unit Project + Parent Notes
Self-Portrait + Name Art

The August art project is a two-part piece: a self-portrait and name art. It lives on your wall all year as evidence of who your child was at the beginning of this journey. There is no wrong way to do it.

August Art Project · Self-Portrait + Name Art

Crayons, mirrors, collage letters · Connected to ELA Unit 1 — Belonging + Voice

Early Sprouts · Ages 5–6
  • Sit with a mirror and look carefully at your face
  • Draw yourself — hair, eyes, smile, the shirt you love
  • Write your name in bubble letters below the portrait
  • Decorate each letter with colors that feel like you
  • Educator writes a caption (dictated by child)
  • Display it — this portrait belongs on your wall
Late Sprouts · Ages 7–8
  • Draw a careful self-portrait using mirror reference
  • Write your name in bubble letters — fill each letter with images from your story
  • Add a one-sentence caption independently: "This is me. I am ___."
  • On the back, write your name's origin and meaning (family research)
  • Read your caption aloud to someone you love
  • Display and share with your BGA Canopy Guide

Parent Notes · Month 1

On pace: Sprouts families move faster than Seedlings — sessions run 30–60 minutes and include more subjects per day. If your Late Sprouts learner is eager, let them go. If your Early Sprouts learner needs more time on one book, take it. The goal is deep engagement, not completion.

On reading levels: Do not place your child by age. A 7-year-old who is just beginning to decode sounds more like an Early Sprout this month. A confident 6-year-old reader may be ready for Late Sprout work. Follow the child, not the calendar.

On math placement: If you haven't completed your Singapore placement activity yet, do it before August 18. Contact your BGA Canopy Guide if you're unsure where to start. Placing too high is harder to undo than placing conservatively and moving forward quickly.

On the Word Jar: Keep it going all year. It doesn't have to stop after Month 1. Some families have made this a permanent kitchen-table tradition. Let your learner own it — they can add words whenever, not just during school time.

Questions? We're Here.

Message your BGA Canopy Guide through The Grove any time. For account or membership questions, contact our team at admissions@bennettglobalacademy.org. Full Pilot families have direct Tuesday live session access — bring your questions there too.
